Averett is a private, comprehensive university with its main campus located in Danville, Virginia. Averett offers more than 35 undergraduate degree programs and three master's degree options. Working adults study in the university's accelerated Graduate and Professional Studies Program (GPS) at satellite campuses throughout Virginia and North Carolina. Averett University is the closest four-year program serving Chatham.

Founded in 1859, Averett began as a school for young women. Today it is a coeducational university that is among the oldest continually operating academic institutions in Virginia. Averett attained university status in July 2001. The university maintains a yearly enrollment of 2,800 students. Approximately 900 students are located at the main Danville campus with the difference located in the University's statewide GPS Program.
